Pearl’s Story (2007–2025)

Pearl was our family dog for 18 years. In her final years, she lost her voice. We preserved her throat bone with our daughter’s four-leaf clover and flower petals in resin, nestled inside a clamshell—a portable grave. This experience led to voice-encoded QR technology, and ultimately to SoulCarrier.

Moving between Maui and Japan, we met people standing at boundaries—outside systems, disconnected from their roots, carrying burdens alone for years. “Cross boundaries through resonance”—the principle Pearl taught us became SoulCarrier’s mission.

Why existing services fall short

Language barrier

Government offices and temples have limited English support. Obtaining family registries, negotiating with head priests, contacting cemetery managers—everything requires Japanese.

Institutional barrier

Without a registered address in Japan, procedures become extremely difficult. Registry requests and reburial permits assume you’re a resident.

Time barrier

No one handles everything from research to accompaniment. Hiring a legal scrivener, interpreter, and travel agent separately costs time and money.

Emotional barrier

No one approaches this as “completing a family story” rather than “processing paperwork.” Gathering documents and delivering a family’s narrative are different things.

Why us

  • A Japanese family living between Hawaii and Japan—grounded in both places
  • Fluent in both languages, understanding both systems and cultures
  • Based in Japan with on-the-ground access to government offices, temples, and cemeteries
  • Hands-on experience navigating Japan’s registry, temple, and cemetery systems
  • We approach this as completing a story, not processing paperwork

Voices of trust

Martin (Lahaina, Maui)

“When I met Takuya at church, his daughter had a fever. I saw how much he cherishes family. For three years I carried this burden alone—he was the first person who truly understood.”

Melanie (Hana, Maui)

“No coincidence exists. Your family has given me the opportunity to further my work and validate my mission to provide sanctuary for young people.”

Why now

We are working on this mission in collaboration with the director of a Japanese immigrant museum.

The director told us: “There’s still time—but not much.”

In ten years, the generation will turn. Those who knew the homeland will be gone, and descendants of Japanese immigrants—bloodlines already fading—will have no way to connect with where they came from. They’ll want to reach back, but there will be no one to reach. We have to move before that happens.

SoulCarrier Resonance Circle — Membership

When we helped our first client, Martin, send a letter to his ancestral address in Japan, we realized there were real costs—registry fees, postage, research time. We prepared an estimate, calculated prices, compared ourselves with other providers, and started to approach him about billing.

He called our relationship a “Japanese Bond.” He had carried this burden alone for three years before trusting us with it. Handing him an invoice didn’t feel right—so we stopped.

This isn’t a business. It’s a mission. So we chose a model powered not by fees from those who need help, but by people who resonate with what we do.

The Resonance Circle is the community that sustains SoulCarrier. Through members’ support, we can deliver registry research, family crest identification, and accompaniment to those who need it.

Your support completes someone’s story.

The amount doesn’t matter. The fact that you resonated with this mission is what moves it forward.
For reference, here are the real costs behind this work:

  • Family registry procurement & postage — tens of dollars
  • Cemetery survey travel & lodging — hundreds of dollars
  • Accompaniment to homeland (transport & stay) — hundreds of dollars+
  • Hawaii ⇔ Japan airfare — over $1,000

We do this work as a family. In 2025, we spent four months on Maui supporting disaster recovery; including R&D costs in Japan, the year’s total exceeded $160,000—all funded personally, including loans. From 2026 onward, we plan to spend roughly half the year on Maui to continue this work.

We built TokiStorage and TokiQR to power this mission.
